Finally. The 2015 PGA Tour season is kicking off tomorrow in Hawaii and it’s time to get my golf picks for this year off to a good start.
Two things here. First, I hate this wrap-around season bull-crap. I’ve bitched about it for the last two years and I’ll continue to bitching about it until they change it back. Second, the whole “34 players in the field” is a little ridiculous. I mean just drop the “Tournament of Champions” from the title and call it the Hyundai Open or something like that and invite 125 players.
The one good thing about the Hyundai Tournament of Champions is names of the past tend to show up. I mean the Zach Johnson’s, Bubba Watson’s, Matt Kuchar’s and Hunter Mahan’s of the tour are always there since they always win.
But when you see the likes of Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Villegas, Kevin Stadler and J.B. Holmes on the roster it means these guys had a good 2014 picking up a win along the way and deserve to be back.
Since some of the bigger names decided they were too good to show up, it just means I have a better chance of picking the winners. I’ll be doing the PGA Tour Fantasy thing again this year so I’ll share my picks before the event and then we’ll recap when the champion is crowned. I pretty much sucked last year, coming in 9,572nd place.
So let’s kick 2015 with a bang, here’s my golf picks for the Hyundai Tournament of Champions:
Matt Kuchar
Man I can’t bet against this guy. This guy is smooth as the other side of the pillow (RIP Stuart Scott) and there’s nothing like a laid-back attitude to fit in with the laid-back lifestyle in Maui. Expect Kooooch to be near the top.
Ryan Moore
He’s already one the CIMB Open over in Malaysia. He’s also cashed a couple a couple top-10’s at Kapalua in the past. I expect Moore to continue playing well and be close to the top come Monday.
Jimmy Walker
I tried to ride the coat tails of My man Jimmy Walker last year after his fast start to the season. Unfortunately, he didn’t pick up any big wins as the season wore on. Long bomber and great irons should suit Walker well at Kapalua.
Chesson Hadley
Each week, I believe you have to pick a sleeper and hope he does well to get good points in the PGA Tour Fantasy game. If you pick the studs every time, then you’re picking the same players as everyone else. You can make an argument Ryan Moore could be my sleeper this week. If you think that, then maybe I have two. If Hadley can pick up a great finish, I will pick up some great points.
