These words from the Executive Director of the USGA, David Fay, when questioned about the greens this week at the 110th U.S. Open. On Thursday, after his first round 74, during his post round interview Woods said the greens were “just awful.” I saw the interview live during NBC coverage yesterday with Jimmy Roberts and Fay just flat out called Tiger Woods out. Making a distinct comparison between Phil and Tiger, Fay said:
I think two players used the word awful on Thursday. Phil said he putted awful. Tiger said the greens were awful. As far as the greens are concerned, he’s wrong. That old statement you’re entitled to your opinion? He is entitled to his opinion, but he’s off on his facts. These putting surfaces have never been better.
These are pretty strong words from an old hag who has probably only walked the course and not actually putted the greens. I think I am going to stay more on the side of the #1 player in the world when he says the greens are “awful.” It also seems like the complaining has subsided since Thursday so apparently something was done to the greens since then. Maybe some more water? Who knows but I haven’t heard any complaining since Thursday. When the Executive Director of the USGA makes comments like this, he is just acting like any other CEO of a company. He has to defend the set up and conditions even if they are bad.
Just one note to Mr. Fay. If Tiger does end up winning today, good luck getting a hand shake from him when you hand over the trophy for his 4th U.S. Open.
