I just had that feeling, you know? Like the feeling you had when Tiger Woods was stepping up to putts at Augusta, or Bay Hill, or Torrey Pines so many years ago. The only problem, he hadn't done anything meaningful in golf since 2009. To be exact, it was 749 days and 26 starts, but I still had that feeling. After watching Tiger Woods play pretty well in Australia during the Australian Open and then even better the following week at The Presidents Cup, I thought this would be the week he … [Read more...]
Caddy survey reveals PGA Tour players cheat…Surprised?
When I first read this article in the January issue of Golf Magazine, I really wasn't too surprised to find more than half of the 50 caddies surveyed have witnessed some form of cheating during a PGA Tour event. Think about it. With the amount of money on the line and the amount of prestige that comes along with winning on the PGA Tour, it's human nature for these players to try and gain even the smallest competitive advantage. The caddies were surveyed anonymously so they can speak their … [Read more...]
Tiger Off to Another Strong Start
I recently put out a guest blogger request on Twitter and I am happy to say I have found a good article for the first ever guest post on Front9Back9 Golf Blog. This comes from Cory Walton in San Antonio, who is currently trying to finish strong towards his electrical engineering degree from University of Texas San Antonio. Cory is a huge sports fan and you can read his blog at From The Cheap Seats. Tiger Woods holds on to a three stoke lead at the Chevron World Challenge after posting a … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods clinches Presidents Cup victory for American team, Is he back?
The questions have already started to swirl. I saw them on Twitter last night while Johnny Miller and crew talked about it on air during the final day of the Presidents Cup. Is Tiger Woods back? I even wrote about it last week during the Australian Open after Tiger Woods fired a 5-under 67 to take the second round lead. In the final day of the 2011 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, Tiger Woods closed out Aaron Baddeley 4 and 3 to clinch the cup for the American team in what seemed to be a … [Read more...]
Front9Back9 Golf Blog Now Accepting Guest Bloggers!
I have been thinking about this for some time now and have finally decided I am going to start accepting guest posts from other golf bloggers or golf website operators. I have had numerous emails and requests so I just decided now is the right time. I still have decided I am going to have complete control over the content and I will make the final decision on whether to publish the post or not. So if you are interested in writing a guest post about anything golf, please follow the guidelines … [Read more...]
Well, Well, Well… Look who we have leading a golf tournament
How many times do you see headlines pop when the 58th ranked player in the world is leading a golf tournament on Friday on another continent? When that player is Tiger Woods, it all makes perfect sense. It's been nearly a year, but it seems Tiger Woods is finally playing some golf. Tiger fired a 5-under 67 on Friday in Australia in his tune up tournament before the Presidents Cup next week. Does this mean Tiger Woods is back? It's too early to tell for now, but this, along with many other … [Read more...]
A Second Round 68 Keeps Tiger Around For The Weekend
The tournament organizers are probably waking up from a massive hangover this morning after partying all night now that the main attraction at the Frys.com Open has made the cut. After the first round spectacle, which Tiger Woods called his worst putting day ever, people started questioning his game again and Tiger Woods was on the verge of missing his second professional cut in a row, something he hasn't done since back in the mid 1990's. But all is good this morning at CordeValle Golf … [Read more...]
Fed Ex Cup Playoffs Ends With Drama, PGA Tour Must Be Smiling
The season long run for the Fed Ex Cup ended on Sunday with high drama. Bill Haas took home the $10 million bonus along with a $1.44 million check for winning the Tour Championship on the third playoff hole by extending the playoff after a ballsy par save on the second playoff hole. Even after the amazing par save from the edge of the water hazard on the 17th hold in sudden death, Haas put his tee shot on the par-3 18th in the center of the green, while Hunter Mahan put it in the front … [Read more...]
Let’s See. What Have I Missed?
Let’s See. What Have I Missed? I have been down and out for a couple months now. Seventy-seven days to be exact. July 3, 2011 was my last post and frankly I am pretty upset with myself. I worked hard on this blog since 2009 and 11 weeks of not posting anything is just horrendous. It’s not like I was sick or injured. It’s not like I was working my “real” job 16 hours a day and only had time to sleep. It’s just laziness. Period. So what have I missed over the past 2 ½ months? Let’s … [Read more...]
Mobitee Mobile Golf Assistant Review
Over the last decade, mobile GPS units on the golf course have become pretty popular. I was never one to use a GPS unit, I always preferred to use a rangefinder. Even if I played a course with GPS on the cart I would typically get my yardage from the rangefinder. Over the last five years though, ever since the first iPhone came out, there has been no shortage of apps designed to use your phone as the actual GPS unit. All you would have to do is download the app and pick what golf course … [Read more...]
San Antonio Golf Course Owner Turns to YouTube to Save His Course
My buddy from work sent me this story from a local news station here in San Antonio last night. WOAI had this on their newscast last night and it's a pretty interesting approach to raise money for a golf course. Will it work? Watch the video and tell me what you think. Send money at your own risk. Northcliffe Golf Course … [Read more...]
San Antonio Golf: The Palmer Course at Westin La Cantera
On Saturday, I had the pleasure of playing The Palmer Course at La Cantera in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the golf course. It’s hard to believe The Palmer Course has been on the San Antonio golf scene for ten years now. I can remember when it opened and I could not wait to get out and play it. It has really become a staple of San Antonio golf and has always been one of my favorite golf courses in San Antonio. I was invited to play The Palmer Course with a group of other golf … [Read more...]
Win Catapults Stricker to Fourth in World Golf Rankings
A few months ago, I wrote an article asking which American golfer had the best chance to become #1 if Tiger Woods continues his fall from grace. There was one person on my list that I pretty much wrote off and Steve Stricker proved me wrong today. The win today at The Memorial Tournament gave Stricker his tenth win of his career, along with $30 million in earnings. The win also catapulted him to the top ranked American golfer in the world, jumping over Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar to move … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: The Heritage
Typically The Heritage is played the week after The Masters, which would have been last week. Instead, the Valero Texas Open was moved to the week after Augusta and Hilton Head was moved to this week. With most of the big guys taking the week off last week, they will be back in action this week. Jim Furyk- The defending champ will be looking to … [Read more...]
Brendan Steele Wins Valero Texas Open
In 2010, TPC San Antonio ranked as the sixth hardest golf course played on the PGA Tour. In 2011, when all is said and done, the golf course this year may go down as THE toughest course on TOUR. The TPC San Antonio Oaks course is just flat-out tough. On top of the challenging greens and strong winds that blew all week, there is no wonder why 8-under par won this tournament. This is a far cry from the 18, 20, and lower scores that these pros shot at LaCantera before the tournament moved to … [Read more...]
I’m Not Here To Pile On, But Kevin Na Shot a 15 Today…On One Hole
Look, I'm not going to sit here and pile on Kevin Na. To say he had a rough go around at the 9th hole today during the Valero Texas Open is an understatement. Now I am not a professional golfer, but I can say pretty confidently I have never written down a 15 on the scorecard. I can remember a 10 before, but never a 15. To be fair, I am sure most golfers you see at the local muni each weekend should have numerous 15's on their cards, but end up writing down only a snowman. The 9th hole at … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Valero Texas Open
The PGA Tour moves to my hometown this week and the TPC San Antonio will be the home of the Valero Texas Open. We have five players who finished in the top 10 at The Masters and another two that finished in the top 20. For my picks this week I am going to play off the momentum of Augusta. Geoff Ogilvy- Finished in a T-4 at The Masters and has been playing pretty good leading up to last week. I am backing up Ogilvy with Charley Hoffman. Bo Van Pelt and Angel Cabrera- This is Cabrera's … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Brings the Buzz Back to Augusta
There’s still a lot of golf to be played and I think most people are taking the “let’s wait and see if he can carry it to the weekend” approach, but the one thing I know for sure is golf needs Tiger Woods near the top of the leaderboard and the buzz was back in full gear yesterday. I was out playing golf in the afternoon yesterday and around 4:30 PM I started receiving text messages from buddies asking me if I was watching Tigers run. When I got in the truck to head home I called my dad who … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: The Masters
If my fiancé wants something done this weekend, well it’s going to be slow going. If someone calls to go play golf, it will probably be the only time I will say no. The only thing I wish more is I was in Augusta watching the tournament live. I’m not so I have to resort to watching it in HD. Oh well, here are my picks for the 75th Masters. Tiger Woods- Who knows what Tiger is going to do at Augusta this week. For some reason I just can’t seem to pick against him, especially this week. … [Read more...]
Packed Leaderboard, Big Names Head Into Final Round in Houston
Phil Mickelson likes to play the week before The Masters so he can practice hitting the shots he will use at Augusta next week. Coming into this week he said he didn't know how well he would contend in the Shell Houston Open because the course was not set up to play the "Augusta" type shots. So much for that thought process I guess. Mickelson's 63 tied the course record and put him in a tie at the top of the leaderboard with Scott Verplank. The final round is shaping up to be a great … [Read more...]
