I wrote yesterday that Phil Mickelson really seems to be feeding off the vibe of his wife Amy being in the gallery this week at Torrey Pines, and on Saturday it seems this to still be true. Phil shot a 4-under 68 yesterday in the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open to take a tie for the lead with Bill Haas.
Tiger Woods on the other hand, ended his under par streak yesterday at Torrey Pines by firing a 2-over 74. This was just the second over par round in 47 attempts, which is a pretty decent stat. He is currently eight shots off the lead, and will need probably a 62 or better today to make any kind of noise, since I think the leaders won’t fall too much on Sunday.
Phil Mickelson will be playing with Bill Haas and Hunter Mahan in the final round on Sunday, and Bubba Watson, Anthony Kim and Jhonattan Vegas will be in the second to last group off. Tiger Woods will tee off about 1 1/2 hours ahead of the leaders, so he will need to make some big news on the front 9 before the leaders tee off to maybe get in their heads a little.
I saw an interview before the start of the Farmers that Phil was concentrating on fine tuning things this year instead of trying to change too many things. It seems things are going pretty well right now for Phil and a win today will really be good signs to come for 2011. Let’s just hope if he does pull it off that he won’t fall off the face of the earth like he did after his Masters victory last year.
It’s hard to go against Phil Mickelson today, especially since his wife will probably be in the gallery today, but I think I am going to pick Hunter Mahan to win.
