While a majority of golf fans were watching Tiger Woods and his two rapid fire interview sessions with ESPN and The Golf Channel Sunday evening, Jim Furyk was finishing out his final round at the Transitions Championship to claim his first victory in 32 months. And by the sound of his press conference after the tournament, he didn’t really care what people were watching, or what they would be writing about the next day:
You know what? Tomorrow, the paper is going to read that I won the golf tournament, and I don’t really care if it’s a three-page spread or a little blurb in the corner of the paper because the article is about him. I won the damn thing, and it really doesn’t matter to me.
I agree with Furyk. With a winning check of $972,000, his 14th career victory and a bump to #6 in the World Rankings, why should he care what people were watching. The field was filled with top players in the world and he finally got back in the winning circle on the PGA Tour. Besides, Tiger Woods was trying to hold off the press conference until after he thought the TV coverage would be over. But the tournament was delayed because of rain throughout the day. So at least Tiger tried to save the spotlight until after he thought the tournament would be over.
It does seem like Furyk is tired of the Tiger Woods circus though. And I am sure every player out there is sick of it. But the fun is just beginning. I can’t wait until the Masters….
