First it was the youngest player to win a professional golf tournament. Next, it was the youngest player to win on the LPGA Tour. Then it was the youngest golfer to become #1 ranked in the world. Now, Lydia Ko has become the youngest major champion winner in LPGA history.
Ko fired a 63 in the final round of the The Evian Championship to earn her first the major championship and 4th LPGA Tour win this year. The 8-under par day included eight birdies and no bogeys in route to what turned into a dominating performance for Ko. Her closest competitor, Lexi Thompson, finished the day 6 shots back at 10-under.
The victory will take a lot of pressure off the 18-year old golf star. In her post round comments, she mentioned all the questions about when she would win her first major championship:
“Everyone won’t be asking me when I’ll win my first major because it’s done.”
For Lexi Thompson, she just could not keep up with Ko as she ran away with the golf tournament. Thompson shot a final round 70 and just could not get anything going. With a double-bogey on the par-3 14th, you could see the air just deflate from Thompson’s chances.
With the win, Lydia will have to wait a bit longer to reclaim the top ranking in the Rolex World Rankings. She needed to win and have Inbee Park finish outside the top-17. Park finished the tournament T-8 and will hold onto the No. 1 position.
