There’s still a lot of golf to be played and I think most people are taking the “let’s wait and see if he can carry it to the weekend” approach, but the one thing I know for sure is golf needs Tiger Woods near the top of the leaderboard and the buzz was back in full gear yesterday.
I was out playing golf in the afternoon yesterday and around 4:30 PM I started receiving text messages from buddies asking me if I was watching Tigers run. When I got in the truck to head home I called my dad who was watching and Tiger had just birdied 15 to get to 6-under for the tournament. We stayed on the phone through his tee shot and missed birdie putt on 16 and I got home in enough time to see the great 8-iron around the tree and birdie putt on #18. I received at least five other text messages from my brother and friends after the round.
I watched the back 9 again when I got home and the buzz from Jim Nantz, Nick Faldo and the rest of the EPSN Golf Team was in full swing. The talk on the Golf Channel post-game show was all about Tigers round and Scott Van Pelt and Andy North led off Sports Center with reports from Augusta. The buzz was truly back and it just goes to show how badly golf wants this guy back near the top.
But like I said above, can Tiger Woods carry his Friday 6-under 66 momentum into the weekend? Saturday is moving day and every year there seems to be someone who shoots a low round. There are some big names on the leaderboard going into the weekend. But these same big names are also looking for their first major championship, and we will have to see how the nerves hold up over the weekend.
By the end of Saturday, I think the leading number will be 11-under. I also think Rory McIlroy and Jason Day will drop just a bit. Rory has had one bogey all week through the first two rounds, which is spectacular. But he cannot continue that throughout the weekend. The greens will be firmed up and the pins will be placed a little tougher. I think Rickie Fowler is going to have a good weekend and a good round on Saturday could put him right up near the top.
It’s going to be fun to watch and I am confident in saying most people will be at home watching.
