You can now add Stuart Appleby to the "59 Club" on the PGA Tour. In the final round of The Greenbrier Classic, Appleby finished with three birdies in a row to shoot the low round, adding his name to the likes of David Duval, Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and only three weeks ago, Paul Goydos in the John Deere Classic. Is it enough to get his first victory? CBS put up a graphic during the round saying Appleby hasn't shot below a 65 in something like 358 rounds of competitive golf, and he hasn't … [Read more...]
David vs Congressional
The United States Golf Association revealed an updated Congressional County Club today, making the 2011 U.S. Open course setup a thing of beauty. All 18 greens have been rebuilt, and Mike Davis and the USGA have added seven tee boxes to stretch it out to 7,568 yards, 300 yards longer then the 1997 U.S. Open won by Ernie Els. My favorite hole on the course, #18, has been lengthened to 521 yards and will force players to hit mid or long irons into the green. In 1997, the 18th played as #17, … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Out Having Fun
It was just about five months ago that Tiger Woods smashed a fire hydrant and slammed his Escalade into a tree. Then came the 15 or 100 or how-ever-many women he allegedly had affairs with. Then came the sex rehab stent. Then the bogus press conference. Then the real press conference. All this leading up to his return to competitive golf at the Masters two weeks ago. Now the last few days have been filled with commitments to the U.S Open, Quail Hollow, The Players, and his own former … [Read more...]
Love For The Masters
Davis Love III hasn't played the Masters in two years. But with the impressive 66 he carded today it looks like the little tournament in Augusta in two weeks may be in the back of his mind. After the first day of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Love III has put himself in position where three more good rounds could possibly put him in the mix by Sunday. And a victory would put him in The Masters. At this point the only way he would get in is a victory this weekend or a victory next week at … [Read more...]
Jim Furyk Wins the Transitions Championship
While a majority of golf fans were watching Tiger Woods and his two rapid fire interview sessions with ESPN and The Golf Channel Sunday evening, Jim Furyk was finishing out his final round at the Transitions Championship to claim his first victory in 32 months. And by the sound of his press conference after the tournament, he didn't really care what people were watching, or what they would be writing about the next day: You know what? Tomorrow, the paper is going to read that I won the golf … [Read more...]
Rookie Diary: Chris Wilson
I came across a blog a few days ago I wanted to share with everyone. I enjoyed it so much I added it to my blog roll and will be checking it out weekly. Chris Wilson is a 25 year old PGA Tour rookie. Each week he has been writing a diary post for GolfWeek.com that chronicles his rookie season on the PGA Tour. It really gives a good insight into what these guys go through weekly. From people on the outside looking in, the life of a PGA Tour pro may seem lucrative. But after 8 starts this … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Coming Back for The Masters
While some people will say Tiger Woods should get a tournament under his belt before the Masters and others will say the Masters is the perfect place to make his first start, I am somewhere in the middle. But the one thing I can be sure about is how happy I am to finally hear it from the man himself. He is done with the intense therapy. He is making amends with his wife and family. He has been seen working at his game like crazy. And now it's time for him to get back out and do what made … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods and Hank Haney Back Together
Sources have told The Golf Channel and Golf Digest has confirmed Hank Haney is back in Orlando and has been seen with Tiger Woods at Isleworth practicing. Now what does this mean? Who knows. I am sure speculation will grow over the next week. The WGC CA Championship is this weekend and Tiger already missed the deadline to enter. The Transitions Championship is next week in Tampa and Tiger has never played that tournament in his career. The Tavistock Cup is March 22-23 at Isleworth. Then … [Read more...]
Camilo Villegas Playing Well Right Now
Camilo Villegas shot a cool little 67 today in the 3rd round of the Honda Classic to take a 3 shot lead over Nathan Green and Vijay Singh. I tell you one thing, Camilo is one cool cat. And ripped. Going into the thrid round Anthony Kim was in the hunt and shot a 3-over 73 and is now six shots back. I was hoping Kim would stay in contention all day but he just couldn't get anything going today. Should be a good final round tomorrow. It's also great to hear Johnny Miller and the NBC golf team … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Returning Soon???
The report broke earlier today that Tiger Woods has been recently seen at home in Isleworth hititng balls and is in the process of getting back into the routine of training. What that means no one really knows. If the reports are true, all it truly means is he could be close to coming back. Of course it is all speculation. All the Tiger talk is speculation. Especially when you have one of the most respected and quite possibly the largest golf magazine, Golf Digest, coming out today and … [Read more...]
Hunter Mahan’s Winning Wedge
The day after every PGA Tour event, Golf.com usually posts a breakdown of the clubs the winner used for the week. It gets pretty specific down to which shaft and flex and what loft the player is using. So this week, after the Waste Management Phoenix Open, they had Hunter Mahan's clubs he used in the tournament. Since I play Ping myself, I was really interested to see what he was playing. I noticed he was using the Ping Eye 2 wedge. Yes the same wedge that is "exempt" from the new USGA … [Read more...]
Hunter Mahan Gets His Second PGA Tour Victory
Some will question what Rickie Fowler was thinking when he laid up on the par 5 15th, but no-one will question the sweet little 6-under 65 shot by Hunter Mahan to get his second PGA Tour victory. The yearly tradition known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where the 16th hole is the rowdiest setting in golf, is in the books and Hunter Mahan gets a nice boost to number six in the Fed Ex points and secures himself his second PGA Tour victory before the age of 30. Fowler laid up from just … [Read more...]
Gatorade Cuts Off Tiger
The ripple effect from Tiger Woods' sex scandal has shown it's head again. Gatorade announced they will cut ties with Tiger Woods, but keep their relationship with The Tiger Woods Foundation, which makes no sense to me. Why would they continue with his foundation? Gatorade was one of Woods' biggest sponsors and is now the third major sponsor to drop him, which is fine with Mark Steinberg, Tiger's agent. This is all fine and dandy if you ask me. Tiger Woods has been playing golf his entire … [Read more...]
Congrats to Cameron Beckman
If you didn't know, there is a PGA Tour event going on down in Cancun, Mexico. The Mayakoba Golf Classic plays second this week to the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship but is no less important than any other PGA Tour event on the schedule throughout the year. As any pro golfer out there will tell you winning on tour is still tough no matter where you are. So my congratulations go out to Cameron Beckman for winning this weeks Mayakoba Golf Classic. Beckman is a fellow San Antonio … [Read more...]
Reaction To Tiger Woods Statement
It has been almost 24 hours since Tiger Woods made his statement to the media and the world. The statement was carried live on all the major news networks, The Golf Channel, ESPN, and streamed live across the internet. ESPN Radio here in San Antonio along with our other sports station, Ticket 760, had the statement live as well. I imagine that was the case across the nation as well. Sports Center this morning had pictures from Miami to Stockholm to Thailand showing the press conference. … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods to Make a Statement on Friday
Finally, the moment we have all been speculating on for almost three months now. Tiger Woods is going to finally sit down and face the music. Well not really, but he is going to talk to the media. And let me make one thing very clear. He is going to talk to the media and "It is NOT a press conference." Yes this is the statement from his website and his agent wants everyone to understand that this is not going to be a press conference and Tiger will read a statement. Tiger will speak to … [Read more...]
Well, I am NOT a Very Good Bracketologist!!
After the first day of competition in the WGC Accenture Match Play it doesn't look like I did too well with my picks. I picked Padraig Harrington to come out of the Bobby Jones bracket and Harrington got beat 3 and 1. In the Ben Hogan bracket I still have Rory Mcilroy alive. In the Gary Player bracket I have Geoff Ogilvy and finally in the Sam Snead bracket I have Stewart Cink still alive. Huh.. Maybe I am still doing alright. I still have three of the four still remaining in the … [Read more...]
And The Winner Is…
The WGC Accenture Match Play Championship tees off tomorrow, and I am picking Tiger Woods to take it all... Oh wait, Tiger is still getting his life together. I will take Phil Mickelson... Oh wait, Phil is taking a vacation with his kids. So the two most popular players are not playing this week. So why watch right? WRONG!! There are still some very intriguing match ups and it should be an exciting weekend. Who do I pick to win it? Well I thought you'd never ask. Coming out of the … [Read more...]
Rooting for Duval
Just sitting here watching the final round of The Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and Dustin Johnson and Paul Goydos seem to be tightening up right now on the back nine while david Duval is 3 under on the 14th and sitting at -15 overall, two back of the leaders. Johnson and Goydos have both just missed the green on the par 3 12th and will need good shots to try and save par. I really hope David Duval gets a victory soon. I think it's a great story to come back and win after all he has been … [Read more...]
Fantasy Golf Free-Fall
So the last two weeks have been a free-fall in my Fans of Devil Ball Fantsay Golf League. I went from 27 to 38 to sitting at 53rd place as of now. I don't know what is going wrong. Phil and Justin Leonard and Mike Weir and basically everyone I have picked so far has failed miserablly. So here we go, week 6. I am starting Luke Donald and having Phil back him up in my A group. In the B group I am staring Dustin Johnson and Sergio. Backing them up Jim Furyk and Alex Prugh. In my C group … [Read more...]
