The tournament organizers are probably waking up from a massive hangover this morning after partying all night now that the main attraction at the Frys.com Open has made the cut. After the first round spectacle, which Tiger Woods called his worst putting day ever, people started questioning his game again and Tiger Woods was on the verge of missing his second professional cut in a row, something he hasn't done since back in the mid 1990's. But all is good this morning at CordeValle Golf … [Read more...]
Let’s See. What Have I Missed?
Let’s See. What Have I Missed? I have been down and out for a couple months now. Seventy-seven days to be exact. July 3, 2011 was my last post and frankly I am pretty upset with myself. I worked hard on this blog since 2009 and 11 weeks of not posting anything is just horrendous. It’s not like I was sick or injured. It’s not like I was working my “real” job 16 hours a day and only had time to sleep. It’s just laziness. Period. So what have I missed over the past 2 ½ months? Let’s … [Read more...]
Win Catapults Stricker to Fourth in World Golf Rankings
A few months ago, I wrote an article asking which American golfer had the best chance to become #1 if Tiger Woods continues his fall from grace. There was one person on my list that I pretty much wrote off and Steve Stricker proved me wrong today. The win today at The Memorial Tournament gave Stricker his tenth win of his career, along with $30 million in earnings. The win also catapulted him to the top ranked American golfer in the world, jumping over Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar to move … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Valero Texas Open
The PGA Tour moves to my hometown this week and the TPC San Antonio will be the home of the Valero Texas Open. We have five players who finished in the top 10 at The Masters and another two that finished in the top 20. For my picks this week I am going to play off the momentum of Augusta. Geoff Ogilvy- Finished in a T-4 at The Masters and has been playing pretty good leading up to last week. I am backing up Ogilvy with Charley Hoffman. Bo Van Pelt and Angel Cabrera- This is Cabrera's … [Read more...]
Packed Leaderboard, Big Names Head Into Final Round in Houston
Phil Mickelson likes to play the week before The Masters so he can practice hitting the shots he will use at Augusta next week. Coming into this week he said he didn't know how well he would contend in the Shell Houston Open because the course was not set up to play the "Augusta" type shots. So much for that thought process I guess. Mickelson's 63 tied the course record and put him in a tie at the top of the leaderboard with Scott Verplank. The final round is shaping up to be a great … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Shell Houston Open
The Shell Houston Open starts off the Spring session of Yahoo Fantasy Golf, and I plan on winning it. I finished in 70th place in Fans of Devil Ball for the winter session. My picks are going to be better this time around, and I will lead from start to finish. Some players use this week at the Shell Houston Open as a tune-up for The Masters next week, while some actually play to win. Phil Mickelson is one of the guys who is really not interested in playing to win, he is just more worried … [Read more...]
Chief Executive Golfer Posts 3rd Place Finish at Transitions Championship
If you are interested in life on the PGA Tour, or the struggle to make a life on the PGA Tour, then a blog written by PGA Tour players Scott Stallings called Chief Executive Golfer on BNET.com is great read. Stallings chronicles his life on TOUR and talks about how important it is to operate his golf playing as an actual business. I am confident in saying most people think life on the PGA Tour is all fun and luxury for everybody. Sure, for guys like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and some … [Read more...]
Gary Woodland Picks Up First PGA Tour Win, And a Masters Invitation To Go Along With It
Gary Woodland won more than a PGA Tour tournament on Sunday. Along with the biggest payday of his career and a two year exemption on TOUR, he will be playing in The Masters in three weeks. Woodland won the Transitions Championship on Sunday with a 10-foot par putt on his 72nd hole, while Webb Simpson bogeyed the 18th right behind him to hand the victory over to Woodland. Simpson really choke it away on the final holes on Sunday, playing considerably slower than the previous days. The … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: WGC-Cadillac Championship
Well it's that time again, time to make my golf picks and predictions for this week. The WGC-Cadillac Championship is on the schedule which means the big dogs are teeing it up. I need a big week so I can move up the board in fantasy, so I am not holding back anything this week. Tiger Woods- Yes I am picking Tiger Woods. He needs a win and needs a win bad. Tiger has won on this course six times, but the last came in 2007. Just in case the reports are true that Tiger was erratic in … [Read more...]
Rory Sabbatini Wins The Honda Classic
On Thursday, I tuned into The Golf Channel broadcast of The Honda Classic and listened to the commentators talk about how long it's been since Rory Sabbatini had done anything on TOUR and how far he has dropped in the World Golf Rankings. On Sunday, Rory Sabbatini won The Honda Classic, and I wonder if maybe he tuned into the broadcast to hear Dottie Pepper and the gang bash him. At the conclusion of play on Sunday, only 13 players were in red numbers. The PGA National Championship Course … [Read more...]
Red Hot Luke Donald Faces World’s New #1 Martin Kaymer in Final
Luke Donald has been playing some great golf this week. On Saturday, Donald started the day by taking out Ryan Moore 5 & 4. In the afternoon match, Luke took out Matt Kuchar 6 & 5. This was after beating Manassero on Friday 3 & 2, Molinari on Thursday 2 & 1 and starting the week by pounding Charley Hoffman 6 & 5. Luke Donald is clearly playing the best golf this week and the winning outcomes in his five matches so far have proved it. But on Sunday, he will be taking on … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks and Predictions: Mayakoba Golf Classic
Tiger Woods probably wishes he would have skipped the WGC-Accenture Match Play and went down to Cancun instead to play in the Mayakoba Golf Classic. While the top 66 players in the world are in Arizona there is another golf tournament going on down in Mexico. In Fans of Devil Ball Fantasy Golf I just flat out suck. I am in 81st place and there is probably only 82 players in the group. Anyways, here are my picks this week which I hope do something for me. Rory Sabbatini- I picked Sabbatini … [Read more...]
February Madness: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship
We are less than three weeks away from NCAA March Madness, so what better of a way to get my bracket picking skills oiled up then picking the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship bracket. I found a good challenge over at GolfWeek.com, which is giving away some good prizes. Unlike NCAA March Madness, I will only have one bracket for the Golf Week Match Play Challenge. As we all know, anything can happen in the first round, and there are some very intriguing match-ups that can go either … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
I'm stuck with a dilemma right now with my golf predictions for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. On one hand, Dustin Johnson is a two-time champion here at Pebble Beach and then played the U.S. Open pretty well right up until the weekend. On the other hand, how can I look past Phil Mickelson this week who is practically smirking at me daring me to pick him. I also said a couple days ago I was benching Phil for a bit. So what is one to do? With my "A" team pick this week, I am … [Read more...]
Mark Wilson Won in Phoenix, Did You See It? I Didn’t..
During my "real" job today, Mark Wilson won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in the second playoff hole over Jason Dufner, notching his second victory of the year in only three events. The play ended today because of the long frost delays Thursday-Sunday, which forced a Monday finish. Mark Wilson took a big lead in the Fed Ex Cup points race, but it's still early in the year. Two Gloves Gainey? If you wondering what happened to him over the weekend? Well he triple bogeyed the 17th hole … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Waste Management Phoenix Open
Alright, here we go, week five of Front9Back9's Golf Picks & Predictions. Last week I sucked, so now it's time to redeem myself. My promise to you: At least one week this year, I am going to pick the winner with my golf picks. And this is the week. Phil Mickelson- Great start to the PGA Tour season at Torrey Pines. Phil played great. It wasn't enough to overtake Bubba Watson, but I think Phil can redeem himself at TPC Scottsdale. Yes, Phil Mickelson is the easy pick, but I need to … [Read more...]
Waste Management Phoenix Open: Hot Sorority Chicks, Beer and Golf
Next week is the start of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. So let's be honest, why is this tournament one of the most attended events on the PGA Tour? It probably has mostly to do with the hot sorority chicks and cold beer rather than the golf that is being played. Let's not forget that Arizona State University is consistently ranked among the best party schools in America. Ask any of the sorority chicks what a "driver" is and they will tell you they need one to get them home safely. … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Farmers Insurance Open
Guess what?!?! Tiger Woods is playing this week. Well to be honest, if you didn’t know he was playing this week in the Farmers Insurance Open, you must have been under a rock since last week. Yes, Tiger Woods is back, playing at the same place he won his last major championship. Since that U.S. Open victory at Torrey Pines in 2009, let’s just say Tiger Woods life has changed a bit. So do you have a pair big enough to take Tiger Woods as the favorite in this tournament? I don’t know if I … [Read more...]
The Resurrection of Tiger Woods: First Up, Torrey Pines
The headlines seemed to be dominated around mid-day today with word that Tiger Woods committed to the Farmers Insurance Open. While not such a big surprise, this will be his first tournament at Torrey Pines since he won that dramatic U.S. Open in 2009 on a broken leg. Woods has dominated Torrey Pines, winning the Farmers six times over his career, along with the 2009 U.S. Open. To be honest, I am pretty stoked about it. But which Tiger do you think we are going to see? In his last event … [Read more...]
Mark Wilson Wins in Honolulu
Mark Wilson made a great par save on the 17th hole in the final round of the Sony Open to stay one shot up. Then after a few adjustments in the earlier holes, he hit driver in the fairway on the 18th and then 3-wood in the fairway again to leave a simple chip up and one part birdie to earn the victory. His 3-under round today was good enough for his third PGA Tour victory. Tim Clark had a great final round and finished in a tie for 2nd place with Steve Marino. Matt Kuchar also had another … [Read more...]
