The Ryder Cup is less than two days away and we'll get our first set of pairings on Thursday. There's so much speculation out there on who should be paired together. I think there's at least one players who is tough to pair with - Patrick Reed. I'm going to be watching him closely this weekend to see how he plays. He's a very streaky player and I think we'll see how the pressure gets to him, but I think I have found someone to pair him with. Here are five potential pairings I hope to see … [Read more...]
Is There a Better Sunday in all of Golf?
Ah yes. Sunday at The Masters. Is there a better Sunday in all of golf? The azaleas are in full bloom, the golf course is perfect, and CBS Sports has somehow figured a way to put a microphone on the birds. There's currently only 13 players under-par going into the final round. All these guys are within 5-shots of the lead, which means anything can happen today and the green jacket is up for grabs to anyone who wants to shoot a good round today. Leading the way is Jordan Spieth and … [Read more...]
Front9Back9 Golf Picks: The Masters
Ah yes, it's that time of the year. The azaleas are blooming, the birds are chirping, and Tiger Woods will miss his first Masters in 20 years while nursing a back issue. It's Masters Thursday and Arnie, Jack and Gary will be hitting the ceremonial first tee shot and then we can finally get into some real golf action. Frankly, I am tired of the hype already. Let's just get to playing some golf. The "experts" say this is the most wide open Masters ever. I guess because Tiger Woods is not … [Read more...]
Day Four Volunteering at the Valero Texas Open
Sunday wrapped up another year of volunteering at the Valero Texas Open, and I have to admit, as of right now I don't know if I will return next year for a third year. Next year's tournament is a long ways off so maybe I will change my mind by then, but we'll wait and see. Just to quickly recap, I was on the NBC/Golf Channel Broadcast Committee. What this means is I am assigned to a group to walk with and after each hole, I radio back to the TV truck to confirm the players scores. It's a … [Read more...]
Valero Texas Open Adds Another Top 10 Player to the Field
I've been playing hooky today from work and with the cold weather down here in San Antonio today I have nothing better to do then check out what's happening on Twitter. The Valero Texas Open is coming up here in a few weeks and today on Twitter they have announced two more additions to the field. Yep, that's right. Zach Johnson is scheduled to play again this year in the Valero Texas Open. That's awesome and gives San Antonio two of the top 10 world ranked … [Read more...]
Early Player Commitments to Valero Texas Open
I’ll be volunteering at the Valero Texas Open again this year after having a blast last year walking inside the ropes with the NBC Golf team. This year, Greg Norman Productions has taken over the tournament management and they have promised big changes to the Valero Texas Open. I have gone to the tournament for just about every year I can remember. It moved over to TPC San Antonio Oaks Course four years ago and top players seem to enjoy the course. It’s much easier to walk then the Resort … [Read more...]
My Valero Texas Open Volunteering Experience
It’s Sunday evening and the last four days have been long - I’m sunburned and my feet and calves hurt. If you’re anything like my wife though you probably don’t want to hear my complaining – she claims it’s all self-inflicted since I didn’t use sun block on Friday and I eat too much and don’t work out enough. If you didn't know, the Valero Texas Open has just completed here in San Antonio and Martin Laird pulled off an unexpected victory and stamped his ticket to Augusta. Me on the other … [Read more...]
Valero Texas Open: 5 Players Worth Following
The players teeing it up at the Valero Texas Open on Thursday could quite possibly make up the best field we have seen in San Antonio is some years. With two of the top-1o players in the World Golf Rankings headlining, it should turn out to be quite an exciting tournament come this weekend. Below are five players worth following at the Valero Texas Open starting on Thursday. 1.) Rory McIlroy McIlroy is coming off a tough three months to start 2013. With The Masters on his mind, Rory … [Read more...]
Win Catapults Stricker to Fourth in World Golf Rankings
A few months ago, I wrote an article asking which American golfer had the best chance to become #1 if Tiger Woods continues his fall from grace. There was one person on my list that I pretty much wrote off and Steve Stricker proved me wrong today. The win today at The Memorial Tournament gave Stricker his tenth win of his career, along with $30 million in earnings. The win also catapulted him to the top ranked American golfer in the world, jumping over Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar to move … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: The Honda Classic
My fantasy golf has been horrendous this year. Currently I am sitting in 85th place in Fans of Devil Ball Fantasy Golf. The PGA Tour is moving across the country and the first stop is in Palm Beach Gardens, FL at The Honda Classic. Last Thursday rumors were swirling that Tiger Woods could possibly enter after his terrible WGC Match Play showing, but that turned out false. The tournament is right in his new backyard pretty close to his new estate in Florida. He didn't enter, citing … [Read more...]
Who Will Be The Next American to Overtake #1 Again?
When the Official World Golf Rankings are updated on Monday, the top four spots will be held by players from across the pond. Europe that is, and it's really remarkable to look at the top ten. The top five players in order go like this; Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, and Graeme McDowell and Tiger Woods. The win by Luke Donald this weekend at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the great play by Martin Kaymer secured Europe will hold the top spots for now, with Paul Casey … [Read more...]
Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler take home PGA Tour awards
Congratulations to Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler for taking home some hardware today. Jim Furyk was voted PGA Tour Player of the Year by the players and Rickie Fowler was voted Rookie of the Year. No real surprise with Rickie Fowler. He is the youngest player since Tiger Woods to win the Rookie of the Year. Tiger was 20 years old in 1996 when he took home the award and Fowler is 21. He finished 32nd in the Fed Ex rankings and ended the year ranked 25th in the World Golf Rankings after … [Read more...]
Golf Picks & Predictions: PGA Tour Player of the Year
On Tuesday, the PGA Tour released the finalists for the 2010 Player of the Year honors. While I agree with four-of-the-five nominees, there is one I don't think should be on the list. The five players listed have never been named as the Player of the Year, all because of some dude named Tiger, who has won the award ten times in the last 13 years. So while all five of these players are great, there is one player who deserves it most. And the nominees are: Ernie Els- Two wins in 2010, … [Read more...]
Jim Furyk takes home the PGA Tour Player of the Year
Only four players have been named PGA Tour Player of the Year over the last decade. On Monday, Jim Furyk was added to the list thanks to his three victories and runner-up finish on the money list. When you think about it, four different players over the last ten years is pretty special, but with a guy by the name of Tiger Woods winning seven of the last ten, it doesn't seem so special. Vijay Singh took home the honor in 2004 and Padraig Harrington won the trophy in 2008. But other than that, … [Read more...]
PGA Championship Setting Up For A Great Finish
There was no fog delay Saturday morning and it looks as if they will get getting back on schedule by the end of the day. Some of the biggest names in golf are starting to get closer to the leader, Matt Kuchar. The conditions are perfect right now. Rain overnight has softened the course even more and the wind is pretty calm right now. That can change at anytime but right now is the time for Tiger, Vijay, and Bubba Watson to get some birdies before they go out for the start of their third … [Read more...]
Yahoo Fantasy Golf Week 1
For the last 6 or 7 years I guess, I have always played fantasy football and baseball. But this year will be my first year for fantasy golf. I joined another golf blog's fantasy group, Devil Ball Golf, and hope to maybe make my mark in this group and prove I know my golf. The first week, I scored a total of 208. In this group that puts you tied for 40th place. The winner scored 237 for week 1. Week 2 will be different. My starting lineup for day one consists of Zach Johnson, Rory … [Read more...]
