Each week I read quite a few golf blogs and I pick out my favorite four posts and share them here on the Golf Blog Foursome. Check out these posts and let me know what you think below or on Twitter @Front9Back9. The Declining State of Golf - The Sand Trap Michael over at The Sand Trap made some great points in a post late last week in regards to his thoughts on the declining state of golf. This topic has been in the news quite a bit recently and I think will continue to stay a topic … [Read more...]
Front9Back9 Golf Picks: WGC Accenture Match Play Championship
It’s time for a little tune-up before March Madness gets up and running in a few weeks here. I need to get the rust off so I can win the Warren Buffet Billion Dollar Bracket. (That is not a typo; Buffet’s giving away $1,000,000,000 for a perfect March Madness bracket!) Anyways, the WGC Accenture Match Play kicks off tomorrow at Dove Mountain. No word on whether the course will be under snow by the first tee time. (That is not another typo; it has snowed a couple times in previous years at … [Read more...]
Bubba Watson Bounces Back With Win at Riviera After Waste Management Collapse
Bubba Watson fired back-to-back 64's on Saturday and Sunday to claim his first win since winning the 2012 Masters. It was a good win for Bubba and one that he needed badly after collapsing in the final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open with two later bogeys. Of course, Bubba will tell you he didn't technically "need" the win this week, but in my eyes, he definitely needed it. Dustin Johnson tried his best to get the win this week at Riviera C.C. after firing a final round 66, but … [Read more...]
9 Golf Betting Games to Help You Take Some Cash From Your Golf Buddies
Are your golf buddies boring? Do they talk a bunch of smack on the golf course and not back it up? If so, it sounds like your next round should include a golf betting game to help add another level of excitement to your friendly golf game. Betting on the golf course is a fun way to keep things lively. These wagers can range from 25-cents to hundreds of dollars. Hell, I have read stories of PGA Tour pros betting more money on one round of golf then a year's worth of mortgage payments for me. … [Read more...]
Early Player Commitments to Valero Texas Open
I’ll be volunteering at the Valero Texas Open again this year after having a blast last year walking inside the ropes with the NBC Golf team. This year, Greg Norman Productions has taken over the tournament management and they have promised big changes to the Valero Texas Open. I have gone to the tournament for just about every year I can remember. It moved over to TPC San Antonio Oaks Course four years ago and top players seem to enjoy the course. It’s much easier to walk then the Resort … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
I haven’t given an update lately on my pursuit of domination in the PGA Tour Fantasy golf game. In all honestly, I am really sucking it up. My best week of golf picks was the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. In the overall standings, I am sitting in 1,920th place with a total of 2,594 points. The first place guy has a total of 5,144 points, so you can see I have some ground to make up. This week I am going to have a big jump. I have exchanged texts with my selected players this week … [Read more...]
Tiger Who? Jordan Spieth Shows Tiger What’s Up at Torrey
Tiger Woods is going for a record 9th tournament win at Torrey Pines this week. His playing partner on the other hand, is trying for only his second PGA Tour victory. While the two are years apart in wins and age, apparently playing alongside the number one player in the world doesn't phase Jordan Spieth. Playing the much easier North Course at Torrey Pines, Spieth came out and blisterd the course firing a 9-under 63 to take a one shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open. Tiger Woods … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks: Hyundai Tournament of Champions
Have I mentioned before how much I hate the new PGA Tour wraparound season? It’s just stupid. First off, I could have sworn the new season started back in October with the Fry’s.com Open. Funny thing, we haven’t had a meaningful tournament since the Mayakoba in mid-November. And by meaningful, I mean something that counts towards PGA Tour Fed Ex Cup points. So for six weeks, we’ve had to watch the same “silly season” events we see every year. Memo to PGA Tour Brass: Either cancel the … [Read more...]
Golf Blog Foursome: Winter Golf, Geezer Golfers, Norman Brags and Holiday Gift Ideas
Golf Blog Foursome: I read quite a few golf blogs on a weekly basis. Here are four of the best posts from this past week from fellow golf bloggers. Let me know what you think over at Twitter @Front9Back9 or the Front9Back9 Facebook page. GolfBlogger.com: Feeding Your Addiction in the Winter, Part 1: Play Golf I hate this time of year. Why? Well it’s cold outside and I dislike cold. Yes, I live in San Antonio, TX and while I may only see 20-30 days of actual cold weather each year, … [Read more...]
David Duval Looking to Find Some Winning Form in 2014
The game of golf is a truly fickle game. For the dedicated weekend duffer, breaking 80 for the first time in your life can be a grand experience. But you're brought right back down to earth the next time you go out and that 79 turns into a 92. That's golf. Everyone knows it's undeniable. But nobody knows this better than David Duval. At 42-years old, David Duval is giving it one last shot at PGA Tour stardom. On Tuesday, Duval sent out a series of Tweets that carried over to Wednesday, … [Read more...]
Front9Back9’s Golf Picks & Predictions: Northwestern Mutual World Challenge (Tiger’s Tournament)
Golf Picks & Predictions: Each week I will attempt to pick four players following the PGATour.com Fantasy Golf rules. Do you think you can do better? Let me know below or let us know on Twitter @Front9Back9 or our Front9Back9 Facebook Page. Now that I have officially gone 0-4 in making the playoffs in my fantasy football leagues, it's time to start focusing on my 2014 PGA Tour fantasy golf picks. I started back in October with the FRYS.com Open and I smashed it 350 yards down the … [Read more...]
Four Years Strong on Front9Back9 Golf Blog
This past Sunday, I celebrated the four year anniversary of Front9Back9 Golf Blog. What did I do you ask to celebrate? Well, nothing really. I was busy moving into a new house and I had full intentions on writing something but never got around to it. But not to fret, I am off from work today and my future golfing buddy is down for a nap right now, so I have some time. It was December 1, 2009 when I wrote my first golf blog post on Front9Back9.com. This was just a few days after the Tiger … [Read more...]
Edwin Watts Golf Shops Heads For Bankruptcy
Over the years, there's been numerous small golf shops that have come and gone here in San Antonio. During this time, two big brands have stayed put - Edwin Watts and Golf Galaxy. Edwin Watts has two stores here in San Antonio and Golf Galaxy unfortunately has one. I will never know why the smaller shops shut down over the years but the basic economics tell me Edwin Watts and Golf Galaxy probably had something to do with running the smaller shops out of town. I set out to boycott these … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Hits a Golf Ball From Europe to Asia
Have you ever wanted to hit a golf ball from one continent to another? Yeah, neither have I. But now that Tiger Woods has attempted it I am in the middle of making plans to figure out how to get to the closest continental border to tee it up. Okay, I really am not. I don't exactly have the resources Tiger Woods does, so the closest I will ever get is hitting a golf ball from one country to another. The Mexican border is a couple hours away from San Antonio here and I can drop a golf ball … [Read more...]
I Hate The New PGA Tour Schedule: Here’s Why
Does anyone else hate the new PGA Tour schedule as much as I do? Here's why. After the dominating win from the United States in The President's Cup, I was hoping for some time to recover from the marathon 10-month PGA Tour schedule. Let's face it, it's difficult to keep up for like 48 weeks in a row remembering to set your PGA Tour fantasy teams each week. But now, with the start of the Frys.com Open in California which started on October 10, I have to pick right back up and try to start … [Read more...]
Tiger Woods Wants Golf Channel to Fire Brandel Chamblee
If you've been anxiously waiting for Tiger Woods to address the media on Brandel Chamblee calling him a cheater, well, your day has finally come. Tiger is over in China where he is playing in some useless match against Rory McIlroy when someone asked him his thoughts on Brandel so elegantly stating that Tiger was "a little cavalier with the rules" this past year. In true Tiger fashion, he really didn't say much of anything meaningful unless you take "the next step is up to the Golf Channel" … [Read more...]
Wouldn’t It Be Funny If Tiger Woods Won the FedEx Cup After Sucking This Week
I know, it's been a while since I last posted. In fact, my last post was the Monday after the U.S. Open. Time flies when you have an 8-month old son crawling around the house along with new job responsibilities at work and beginning efforts to get a real estate investing business off the ground. Either way, I've neglected Front9Back9.com and I am going to make a better effort at building it back up. So let's do a quick recap of what has happened in the golf world since my last post back in … [Read more...]
Chip-Ins & Chunks: U.S. Open Style
Chip-Ins & Chunks is a new feature I’m starting here at Front9Back9.com to highlight the best and the worst from the past weekend in golf. Tell me what you think below or let us know on Twitter @Front9Back9. Chip-Ins - The Good Justin Rose Wins the U.S. Open Need I say more? With an even-par final round, it was enough to hold off the rest of the field for the Englishman to take home his first major championship. Did I mention he was one of my picks in my Foursome of Favorites … [Read more...]
My Ideas on How to Improve Pace of Play on the Golf Course – Part 7
This is my final and last edition of my ideas on improving pace of play on the golf course. It’s a big problem on golf courses all across the country. Over the last week the USGA and Golf Channel have really made a big push to bring it to the front of people’s minds. Everyone can do something on the golf course to try and save 10-15 minutes or more during a round. The first six ideas really put the responsibility on each individual golfer. With today’s idea, I actually put all the … [Read more...]
My Ideas on How to Improve Pace of Play on the Golf Course – Part 6
We’ve all had a day now to digest the U.S. Open and the victory by Justin Rose was awesome to watch. The pace of play on Saturday at the U.S. Open - well let’s just say it was a bad time to have a six hour round, especially with the USGA launching the While We’re Young campaign on Wednesday. We are almost done with my seven ideas on How to Improve Pace of Play on the Golf Course. Here’s a quick recap of days 1-5: Tuesday - Know Your Golf Ability Wednesday - Play Ready Golf Thursday … [Read more...]
