Looking back now over all my years of playing golf, I wish I would have taken it a bit more serious. Although there's nothing I can do to control the past, I certainly can control the future and I can look forward to working on and improving my golf game in the years to come. For this reason, I've started to track my golf game. What this means is after every round, I take a few minutes and go through every golf shot and jot each shot down. (Actually, since we're in 2014, I create a … [Read more...]
Chip-In’s & Chunks: Billy-Ho Comes Back, Keegan WD’s, Mickelson Quits and Rory 4-Putts
Chip-In’s & Chunks is a weekly feature that lays out the good and the bad from the weekend of golf. Do you have something I missed that should be included? Let us know below or let us know on Twitter @Front9Back9. Another FedEx Cup playoff tournament has come and gone. We’re on to Atlanta and the TOUR Championship, where $10 million is up for grabs and nobody cares about the winner unless the winner is also the FedEx Cup winner. This past weekend had several great chip-ins, but also … [Read more...]
Phil Mickelson is a Quitter and We Should Stop Rooting for Him
Phil Mickelson is a quitter. Bottom line. And all the people who are fooled by his "thumbs-up" and "smiling good-nature" should really step back and reevaluate why you even root for this guy. He's not the person you really think he is. Phil withdrew from the BMW Championship after his piss-poor 76 on Friday. No injury. No emergency. Just a WD because his primary goal right now is the Ryder Cup. He even said as much in his statement released Saturday morning: My primary goal is to rest … [Read more...]
Phil Mickelson Has No Bucket List Golf Courses. What About You?
As an avid golfer, I undoubtedly have my own personal list of bucket list golf courses in which I strive to play before kicking it. If you are an avid golfer like myself, then you likely have your own bucket list of golf destinations. If you’re Phil Mickelson though, there is no course on the planet that is on his bucket list. Not one. Last week during the Deutsch Bank Championship in Boston, The Boston Globe conducted a survey of around 100 PGA Tour players and asked what golf courses … [Read more...]
#ProjectBreak80: Analyzing My Golf Game @ TPC San Antonio
A few weeks ago, I made a new goal for myself to break 80 within the next 16 months. That means by the end of 2015 I need to improve all areas of my golf game and begin to consistently break 80 each time I go out. In my first post, I vowed to analyze each round of golf I play and start tracking what I do well and what I need to improve if I ever want to accomplish this goal. As mentioned in another post, I played TPC San Antonio yesterday. Last weekend I played out at La Cantera Resort … [Read more...]
San Antonio Golf: TPC San Antonio Oaks Course
Yesterday I got the chance to tee it up out at TPC San Antonio and play the Oaks Course. If you don't know, this is the course the pros play during the Valero Texas Open. The course is tough and when the wind blows, it gets really tough. Yesterday was one of those tough days. One of the main reasons I volunteer at the Valero Texas Open each year is for this round of golf. It's only $25 to play and I brought my dad for $99. We split the green fees so it came out to about $65 each. In all … [Read more...]

#ProjectBreak80: Analyzing My Golf Game
I have recently set myself a 16-month goal of cutting my handicap in half. Currently, as of the 8/15 GHIN update, I have a 10.8 handicap. What this means is I would like to have my handicap down to a 5.4 by end of 2015. Is this possible? I think so. It will take some practice and focus, but I think I can do this. Starting with yesterday's round, I am going to begin tracking each round of golf I play and identify where I could improve the most. Sure, it's easy to say my entire golf … [Read more...]

Dick’s Sporting Goods Cutting Back on Golf Business
Late last year, I wrote an article about Edwin Watts filing for bankruptcy, and the extreme displeasure in dealing with Edwin Watts over the years here in San Antonio. Although I vowed to never shop at Edwin Watts again, I do have to admit I took full advantage of the store liquidation here in San Antonio, buying 10 FootJoy golf gloves and 3-dozen Titleist NXT Tour golf balls for about $105. Also in that article, I predicted Golf Galaxy might be one of the next big box retail golfers to meet … [Read more...]
Does the FedEx Cup Seem Like it Will Be Boring This Year?
Is it just me or does the PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoffs have a different feel this year? What I mean by a "different feel" is that nobody seems to give a damn about it. Looking at the top-1o right now as we're half-way through the Wyndham Championship, let's hope we can get some fireworks over the next four weeks: 1.) Rory McIlroy - Hopefully we'll see Rory play all four events, but most likely we'll see him play 2-3 events. He'll probably win it easily this year. 2.) Jimmy Walker - … [Read more...]
So Dustin Johnson is a Coke Head… (Reportedly)
Come on, don't lie. When you first heard about Dustin Johnson's self-described "leave of absence" from professional golf for the remainder of 2014, what did you really think? Did you really think he was taking time off on his own to "improve my mental health and well-being?" Or, did the "better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion" get you? If you're like me, the first thing that went through your mind was "He got popped for something." So it comes as no … [Read more...]
Front9Back9 Golf Picks: Am I Stupid Enough to Pick Tiger Woods?
Well Tiger Woods is back. Well, he's back for at least Thursday and we'll see how the weekend progresses I guess. Who knows, he may be having more surgery by Friday. The Quicken Loans National kicks off tomorrow and Tiger Woods is healed enough to play and potentially get prepped to head to Royal Liverpool in a few weeks to play his first major of the year. So am I stupid enough to pick Tiger Woods this week at Congressional? Hell yeah I am! Here are my picks for the … [Read more...]
Chip-In’s & Chunks: Bubba Wins Green Jacket and Big Names Miss Cut
Chip-In’s & Chunks is all about the good and bad in the game of golf from the past week. Do you have something to add? Let us know on Twitter @Front9Back9 , Facebook or Google+. Chip-In's (the good) Bubba Watson Wins His Second Green Jacket I have to admit I was the first to say I didn't think Bubba had it in him. I mean, he hasn't done anything since 2012 when he won his first major championship and I thought no way in hell he would ever do it again. I was wrong. Everything came … [Read more...]
Is There a Better Sunday in all of Golf?
Ah yes. Sunday at The Masters. Is there a better Sunday in all of golf? The azaleas are in full bloom, the golf course is perfect, and CBS Sports has somehow figured a way to put a microphone on the birds. There's currently only 13 players under-par going into the final round. All these guys are within 5-shots of the lead, which means anything can happen today and the green jacket is up for grabs to anyone who wants to shoot a good round today. Leading the way is Jordan Spieth and … [Read more...]
Front9Back9 Golf Picks: The Masters
Ah yes, it's that time of the year. The azaleas are blooming, the birds are chirping, and Tiger Woods will miss his first Masters in 20 years while nursing a back issue. It's Masters Thursday and Arnie, Jack and Gary will be hitting the ceremonial first tee shot and then we can finally get into some real golf action. Frankly, I am tired of the hype already. Let's just get to playing some golf. The "experts" say this is the most wide open Masters ever. I guess because Tiger Woods is not … [Read more...]
Chip-In’s & Chunks: Kooch Falters, Kids Win and Phil Is a Quitter
Chip-In’s & Chunks is all about the good and bad in the game of golf from the past week. Do you have something to add? Let us know on Twitter @Front9Back9 , Facebook or Google+. Chip-In's (the good) Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is Great for Golf Most golf industry professionals will tell you getting kids involved in the golf is just as important for the game as finding a solution to the pace of play on the PGA Tour. I watched most of the competition earlier this morning on Golf … [Read more...]
Will We Ever See Another Double-Digit Major Winner in Golf History?
I know I am probably in the minority when I tell you I have not yet counted out Tiger Woods in his pursuit of breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships. Even with news coming out yesterday that surgery for a pinched-nerve will keep him out of the 2014 Masters, I am still not writing off his chances yet of winning four more majors to at least tie Nicklaus. It was the 2008 U.S. Open when Tiger won his last major championship. He limped around Torrey Pines as the world watched a … [Read more...]
