Alamo City Golf Trail is adding another golf course to its portfolio. The San Antonio Municipal Golf Association, the management company that oversees all municipal golf course operations for the City of San Antonio, has recently completed the purchase of Northern Hills Golf Club for $6.3 million to add to it’s already rather large golf course portfolio. This is pretty big news in the golf circles around San Antonio and will make for a quite popular golf course.
Northern Hills Golf Club is located within the North Central area of San Antonio. What’s so significant about this is there are no other city owned city golf courses in this area, which will make for a popular golf course. On top of that, Northern Hills has been entangled in legal battles over the last couple years because the owners wanted to sell to a developer who wanted to build apartments on the golf course. The local neighborhood association has tried to push for the city to buy the golf course for several years now.
Alamo City Golf Trail operates one of the largest portfolios of golf courses in the United States, with six golf courses under management;
- Brackenridge Golf Course,
- Cedar Creek Golf Course,
- Mission Del Lago Golf Course,
- Olmos Basin Golf Course,
- Riverside Golf Course and
- Willow Springs Golf Course.
Along with these six golf courses, they also own and operate one of the most popular driving ranges in San Antonio as well, San Pedro Driving Range. Adding Northern Hills Golf Club to the portfolio will bring the total to seven golf courses under management and add that much needed city golf property in a very area popular golf area.
What’s really interesting to me is how quietly the City of San Antonio was able to purchase the golf course. I had found out about the purchase because of an email I had received from the Alamo City Golf Trail announcing the acquisition of Northern Hills to the golf portfolio. It was weird to find out this way because I hadn’t seen a single news article or piece about it in the local media.
The reason this stoked my curiosity is because I figured if this was reported in the media, there would be a large backlash towards the city for spending $6.3 million on a new golf course. Even as I as write this article, I Googled “City of San Antonio buys Northern Hills” and no results came back, so it’s still not being reported.
I ended up emailing my City Councilman for the district here in San Antonio, asking whether the city had actually bought the golf course or the city was just taking over the management of the golf course. Sure enough, one of the councilman aids emailed me back and said the city bought the golf course for $6.3 million and will be adding the golf course to their portfolio and the transaction would close within a couple months.
It really is a good pickup for the City of San Antonio golf portfolio and is a great golf course for players of all levels. It will be interesting to see if any news hits the mainstream media in the future and how people will react to the City of San Antonio spending this kind of money on a golf course.
