On Monday of each week, we look bad at the good (chip-ins) and bad (chunks) of the game of golf from the past week. It’s really fun and you should definitely share it. Did I miss something? Let me know below in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @Front9Back9.
Well the dreadful FedEx Cup Playoffs is finally over. Throughout the weekend, we heard endless talk about projections and calculations and this scenario and that scenario. Needless to say, it was just lame. At the end of the day, if you need a computer system to calculate the winner, then it’s too complicated. (Uh, can anyone say BCS?)
So with the 2013 – 2014 PGA Tour wraparound season behind us, its time to focus on the Ryder Cup in two weeks. But here’s one last Chip-Ins & Chunks to end this golf season.
Chip-Ins (The Good)
Bill Horschel Gets Hot at the Right Time
Who doesn’t think taking home $13.4 million in a three week span is pretty bad-ass? Well Billy Horschel just did it. On Sunday, he closed out the TOUR Championship with a cool final round 68 to take home the $1.4 million dollar prize pot, but more importantly the $10 million FedEx Cup check. Add in the T2 at Deutsch Bank two weeks ago and the win at BMW last week, that adds up to just over $13.4 million. That’s better than bad-ass. That’s F’n amazing.
Greg Norman Nearly Cuts off His Hand
I put this under the chip-ins because he came out with no serious damage, but it could have easily gone down as a horrible situation. Greg Norman nearly cut off his hand on Saturday afternoon from a chainsaw accident in his back yard. He was cutting down some trees when a branch broke and pushed his hand down to the teeth of the chainsaw. He’ll be alright though. Surgery to repair some nerve damage was done but no major long-term damage was diagnosed. He’s one lucky dude and must be living right. Good for Greg, I am glad he’s back on his feet already.
Chunks (The Bad)
Rory McIlroy Gets Caught in a “Tiger Woods is old” Firestorm
Rory McIlroy got caught up in a media firestorm this weekend when he said “Tiger and Phil are on their last few holes of their career.” What? Yeah, that’s what everyone else was saying as well. It’s odd to hear something like that come from Rory, who responded by saying “I’ve said worse to Tiger’s face.” At the end of the day, the story got taken out of context according to Rory. But that guy should know better, especially when everyone in the real world think Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson ARE actually on their last few holes of their career.
Ryder Cup Timing
The last thing to file away in the chunks section from this past weekend is the fact the people running the Ryder Cup selection show are just dumb. Okay, well they’re not dumb, that’s just a figure of speech. But come on, why do you have to make the Captain’s Picks so early? I mean who doesn’t want to have a red-hot Billy Horschel on the team? Twitter was blowing up on Sunday with how ridiculous it is to pick so early. I mean they could have done it today and there would have been no issues. That needs to change in 2016.
