Add Tiger Woods to the list of people who have publicly piled on Sun Mountain in regards to the infamous rain gear malfunctions during the Ryder Cup. Tiger was doing interviews today during media day for his upcoming Chevron World Challenge when he was asked about the rain suits:
One of the things, just going back to the Ryder Cup for a minute I never really got to ask you about that over there is I know Steve’s been caddying since he was 12 years old. He’s pretty good at keeping clubs dry, but he was unable to keep your clubs dry for most of that week. The other issue was the rain suits which leaked and guys were walking around with very heavy suits. I know these are all little things, but when you look at it, it was only half a point that separated victory from defeat. Do you look back on that and say, you know, maybe we should have figured these things out a little bit better beforehand with the equipment?
Tiger responded with one of his typical scripted responses:
Well, there’s no doubt. I think that those are issues that should be resolved before we get there so they’re not an issue while playing. Come tournament time there are always going to be things that pop up, and you just have to deal with them. It happens in every team event I’ve ever been a part of. But little things like that, I think could have been taken care of so they weren’t an issue. Or at least have been tested prior to game time so that any kind of corrections that could have been made, would have been made.
Whoever Tiger was taking a shot at it was pretty boring. If I was Tiger, I would have responded with something like the following:
You know what, those rain suits sucked. My clothes were sopping wet and weighing my swing down. Me and Foley have been working to tighten up my swing and those crappy rain suits just restricted my entire swing. I told Corey before the thing started that I thought he should go with Nike gear. I have only had an issue with one piece of Nike equipment, the putter, but I am working on it. If we were wearing Nike I guarantee we would have retained the cup.
Ok. I know. We would never hear something like this from Tiger Woods or any other athlete. But it’s ok to dream right? Either way, when Tiger is 60 and Nike doesn’t want to pay him $25 million anymore maybe Sun Mountain will chip him off a few hundred thousand a year to wear their stuff.
