Tiger Woods was the fourth group off on Saturday morning in the third round of the Bridgestone Invitational and again struggled to get anything going. By the time the early Golf Channel coverage started, Tiger was already finished. He again refused to talk to the media after his round. During the CBS coverage in the afternoon, they went back and showed some highlights of his round, and it was not pretty. Missed greens, missed fairways, irons 25 and 30 yards off line, chunked chips, and putts not anywhere near the hole.
He is definitely going to need to find something real quick if he wants to play over the next six weeks. Next week is the final major of the year, the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Two weeks after that the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs starts and Tiger is currently sitting at 111th in Fed Ex points. The top 125 make the playoffs. Is there a chance he could miss the Fed Ex playoffs? Unlikely but quite possible if he has a bad PGA Championship. Then in October the Ryder Cup starts in Wales. Tiger currently sits in 9th place in Ryder Cup points and will likely drop after this week’s performance. He has already said he is only going to play if he earns his way on and will not accept a captains pick.
Tiger Woods’ life is clearly in shambles right now. His golf game is the pits. His personal life is in the dumps. His wife is probably going to take him for a few hundred million dollars. So what is a man to do? Golf is what Tiger Woods does and he does it well most of the time. Is it better for him as a golfer and person right now to take the rest of the year off? Probably not. Again, golf is what Tiger Woods does. Playing golf and playing golf at the highest level is what Tiger Woods needs to do right now. Watching the highlights today made me wonder about the state of Tiger Woods mental game right now more than his physical game. The mental part of the game was where he had the biggest upper hand his entire career. Now he has lost that and the show he put on today shows he has a long way to go if anyone is ever going to fear him again… If it ever happens again.
