As Jim Furyk was finishing out his putt in sudden death of the Verizon Heritage Classic, Jim Nantz said it best; “A lot of people will become fans of Brian Davis.” And he is absolutely dead on in saying that. I am a fan of Brian Davis now that he called a penalty on himself in sudden death with his first PGA Tour victory on the line.
How many people will actually do something like that? Golf is a game of honor and sportsmanship and Brian Davis shows this. Sure golfers call penalties on themselves all the time. But in sudden death with a first victory on the line?
Of course CBS has cameras everywhere, and he could have possibly been disqualified if he tried to get away with it and lose a second place finish which will get him another year on tour in 2011 at least. But he called it on himself. And I commend him for doing that in that situation.
And congrats to Jim Furyk for picking up his second victory of the year after a tough week at Augusta last week.
