Some will question what Rickie Fowler was thinking when he laid up on the par 5 15th, but no-one will question the sweet little 6-under 65 shot by Hunter Mahan to get his second PGA Tour victory. The yearly tradition known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where the 16th hole is the rowdiest setting in golf, is in the books and Hunter Mahan gets a nice boost to number six in the Fed Ex points and secures himself his second PGA Tour victory before the age of 30.
Fowler laid up from just over 200 yards on the par 5 15th and The Golf Channel announcers ripped him pretty good. He ended up missing the green a little short on his third shot and parred the hole. A birdie there would have given him a share for the lead. Rickie is one of the longest hitters on tour and would have had nothing more than a 3-iron into the green. It will be interesting to see what he has to say in the press conference.
But congrats to Hunter. Good victory for him and this will definetely get him closer to making the Ryder Cup this year again.
It also looks like golf is heading in the direction of Nascar. If you have never seen it with Nascar, after a win or an interview, the race car drivers always have a drink in their hand and they take a nice big gulp right before the interview is over. Hunter did the same thing during his interview today with his Monster Energy drink. I just thought it was funny to see in golf.
